I am extremely delighted to see that Syed Md. Sajjad Kabir, one of my dearest former students of the Department of Psychology, University of Dhaka, has written a book titled Essentials of Counseling. To my knowledge this is the first book on counseling written in English language in Bangladesh which is going to be published by an eminent publisher. Evidently, it is the product of hard work of the author over a long period of time. The eleven chapters of this book provides a very comprehensive outline of the essential features of counseling - its approaches, techniques and fields wherever counseling services may be rendered. The book appears to be very much focused on the learning needs of the persons interested in this field of knowledge. So, this book can very well be treated as a textbook on counseling for students in higher studies. Besides, it is likely to serve as a resourceful reference book. I am confident that the readers, including students, researchers, mental health practitioners and such others will be immensely benefited by this book. Hamida Akhtar Begum PhD Professor, Department of Psychology University of Dhaka, Dhaka -1000 I am pleased to write foreword on the book Essentials of Counseling written by Mr. Syed Muhammad Sajjad Kabir. He has compiled the book in eleven chapters, which in my view, covers four important sub-sections: (a) Introductory ideas in counseling (chapter 1-3); (b) Basic skills and approaches to counseling (chapter 4-7); (c) Problem areas covered in counseling (chapter 7-10); and (d) Ensuring quality in counseling (chapter 11). Each chapter is quite informative, well organized and educative for both the learners and teachers, who would be immensely benefited following this book. In Bangladesh there exits many misconceptions about counseling, for which professional recognition of counselors are being delayed. What is required in Bangladesh is skill based; approach specific acquisition of competence in counseling and problem specific quality supervised counseling practice to consolidate the professional standard of counselors. It is my sincere hope that this book Essential of Counseling written by Mr. SMS Kabir, will stimulate and facilitate to achieve that noble goal, which will be a landmark in the history of counseling development and its practices in Bangladesh. Mohammad Mahmudur Rahman, PhD Professor, Department of Clinical Psychology, University of Dhaka, Dhaka - 1000. It was a great pleasure for me to find Syed Muhammad Sajjad Kabir, to be bold enough to write a book in simple English, easily understandable for those who are studying Psychology, especially doing major in Counseling Psychology. In the book Essentials of Counseling, SMS Kabir did his best to compile the fundamental feature of counseling very necessary for those who are looking forward to carry his/her study further in counseling field. Clearly, the topics covered in various chapters correspond to the curriculum currently followed at undergraduate level at the subcontinent. On top of it, it also accumulated various techniques and tools of counseling quite in detail at the benefit of the graduate student studying in applied field of psychology. The book can be considered as ready reckoned for those involved and working in the field of Counseling.
